Last night I saw a beautiful new documentary called Sweetgrass which was made by one of the professors in my department at Harvard. The film is completely observational – no narration or interviews – and the result is enthralling. The pacing was perfect. The film followed the journey of 3,000 sheep, a few ranch hands, and sheep dogs up to the high grazing pastures in the Montana Rockies for the summer. I found the film completely reaffirming of the power of observational cinema. It also made me realize how lucky I am to be in the middle of such a fantastic film community.
